Introduction
Greetings. My name is Nicholas Da Silva, and I am the Multidisciplinary Artist and Musician known professionally as ZOOLOOK. For nearly 30 years, I’ve been producing my art—animation, comics, music, and short films. On October 30, 2026, I will celebrate my thirtieth anniversary as the artist ZOOLOOK.
I’ve decided to mark this milestone by opening up my creative journey to you through a new series: The Chronicles of ZOOLOOK.
Why I’m Starting This Series
I know how tough it can be to carve out a music career as an independent artist. I’ve experienced both victories and setbacks, and I’ve made mistakes that cost me time, money, and ownership of my creative work. But I’ve also learned how to take back control of my music catalog—and now, I’m working toward taking complete control of the proceeds of my labor.
I believe in sharing what I’ve learned so that other independent artists don’t have to make the same costly mistakes. The Chronicles of ZOOLOOK is my way of documenting the hard-earned lessons of independence—lessons that can help you navigate the music industry on your own terms.
What to Expect
This series will focus on practical lessons that every independent artist needs to know:
- How to own your music before you release it
- How royalties really work (performance, mechanical, and digital performance)
- Why metadata is money and how to control it
- How to collect royalties internationally so nothing is left on the table
- And much more as we build from foundations to growth strategies
Each lesson will combine my personal experiences with clear, actionable steps you can take right now.
The First Lesson Drops Soon
The first entry, Lesson 1: Foundations — Owning Your Work, will dive into the first of three critical steps that helped me reclaim control of my music: Copyright.
This is where every independent artist should begin.
